Hi my name is Candace Fisher Plane, and I'm a housing and environmental design specialist with the University of Missouri Extension any time you're moving into a new apartment is important to perform a thorough inspection of the apartment with your landlord present before you move into the unit a rental inspection checklist should be filled out and signed by both you and your landlord a copy of the rental inspection checklist can be found at our website the rental condition checklist will give you a chance to move room-by-room through your apartment and note the specific conditions of each room before you move into the unit any damages noted before you move in can then be compared to the condition of the unit when you move out of the apartment you may want your landlord to fix some damages that you note on the checklist before you move in for example if there's like a small hole in the wall you may want them to patch that before you move into the apartment other conditions can just be noted on the checklist for example if there are scuffs on the painting or if there's a stain on the carpet that should just be noted on the checklist so that you are not held responsible for those damages so as you walk into the unit you should first take a look at the front door what does the overall condition of the door look like does it look like there are any damages and then go ahead and take a look at the doorknob in the lock do the lock in the knob seem like they're secure make sure they're not coming loose from the door go ahead and open and shut the door make sure the door shuts securely also make sure it's not sticking when you open and close it go ahead, and you can turn the lock on the knob make sure that's lock blocking properly you want to make sure that all of your locks are working properly on your front door because this relates directly to the security of your unit on the outside there's a spot for a key you should have the key with you put the key in the lock and make sure that your key is working properly go ahead and look at the condition of the inside of the door as you can see on this one it looks like the knob is a little loose, so that's something that you should discuss with your landlord note the condition on the checklist maybe take a picture of it is looks like this apartment was just freshly painted, so there aren't any holes in the walls from pictures posters artwork or mirrors but if there is if that's something that you should know on the checklist so take a look at the flooring in the living room and throughout the entire unit what kind of materials are proposed in the floor and what kind of condition is it in so is the floor made of hardwood laminate carpet tile vinyl in this room they have carpet and so you want to look at the overall condition of the carpet does it look like in general that it's clean can you see any stains on the carpet are there any spots that are worn that for that are torn or that are coming loose if there...

The deadline to file a move in inspection form in 2023 will depend on the specific rental agreement and may vary from state to state. Generally, the landlord must provide the form to the tenant within a certain timeframe after the move-in date (normally 7-14 days). It is then up to the tenant to return the form to the landlord within the same timeframe in order to be in compliance with the rental agreement.
A move-in inspection form is a document used by landlords or property managers to record the condition of a rental property at the beginning of a tenant's lease. The purpose of this form is to document any existing damage or issues so that both parties are aware of the property's condition prior to the tenant moving in. The tenant and landlord typically complete the form together, noting any pre-existing damage, wear and tear, or appliances/fixtures that are in need of repair. This form is important for determining the condition of the property when the tenant moves out, as it will be used as a reference to compare the condition of the property at the start and end of the lease.
Typically, both the landlord/property owner and the tenant are required to complete and file a move-in inspection form. This form serves as a record of the condition of the rental property at the time the tenant moves in, and it helps to identify any existing damages or issues. Both parties should review and document the condition of the property together, noting any damages, and then sign and submit the completed form.
To fill out a move-in inspection form, follow these steps: 1. Review the form: Read through the entire form to understand the information it asks for and the structure of the document. 2. Gather necessary information: Collect the required data for the form, including your personal details, the property address, and any other relevant information. 3. Start with personal details: Fill in your name, contact information, and the date at the top of the form. Include any additional details and identification numbers requested. 4. Note Property Condition: Begin inspecting the property room by room. Document any existing damages, wear and tear, or malfunctioning equipment/fixtures that you identify. Be specific and make sure to note the location and extent of each issue. If there is nothing to report, mark the corresponding sections as "No Damage" or "No Issues." 5. Take Pictures: It is advised to take pictures of any damages or areas of concern as a visual record to support your written documentation. Ensure the date and time are programmed on your camera or smartphone. 6. Indicate Condition Categories: Many move-in inspection forms have categories like "walls," "floors," "windows," etc. Evaluate and rate each of these categories according to their condition (e.g., excellent, good, fair, poor). Remember to consider each room separately. 7. Verify Appliances and Utilities: Check all appliances, utilities, and electrical fixtures to ensure they are functioning correctly. Note any malfunctions or issues with their operation. Take pictures of the model/serial numbers if available. 8. Assess Cleanliness: Evaluate the overall cleanliness of the property, both internally and externally, indicating whether it's clean or requires further cleaning before move-in. 9. Additional Notes: Leave space for additional notes and comments where you can mention any concerns or observations not covered by the pre-defined categories. 10. Sign and Date: Once you have completed the form, sign and date it to validate the document. 11. Share with relevant parties: Provide copies to the landlord, property management, or any other parties involved as necessary. Keep a copy for your records. Remember, it is crucial to conduct the move-in inspection together with the landlord or property manager, if possible. This helps ensure transparency and agreement on the documented condition of the property.
